LOCAL COMMUNITY
Mainly a residential parish of 15,500 inhabitants in 6,300 homes on the
outskirts of the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, 6 miles from Manchester
city centre.
Housing around the church, which has been pronounced a Conservation
Area, is of a high standard and privately owned.
SCHOOLS, INSTITUTIONS, VOLUNTARY GROUPS
There are 4 Primary Schools within the area, one of which is All
Saints’ Voluntary Aided School. The PCC is asked to provide two
Foundation Governors for the Church of England school and clergy have
been fully involved in assemblies. It has been customary for the Rector
to be Chair of Governors. All schools are welcome to visit the
church and some celebrate their Christmas Carol Service and end of term
services at All Saints’
There are two comprehensive schools in the area, Phillips High and
Castlebrook High, one church school, All Saints’ Primary and two
independent grammar schools, Bury Grammar School and Bolton School
within easy reach. There is a Church of England High School, Bury Church
School, located on the edge of the centre of Bury 2 miles away.
WORSHIP AND WORSHIPPERS
The pattern of Services is as follows:
8 am Holy Communion (CW) 3rd Sunday (BCP)
10 am Parish Eucharist (Common Worship Order 1with our own settings)
4/6pm Evensong (BCP)
2nd Sunday 10 am “Free form” family service followed by 11am Holy
Communion (BCP) which is said.
Wednesday 10.15am Holy Communion (BCP)
The churchmanship can largely be described as "middle of the
road". The church’s tradition of worship is centred round the
sacraments of baptism and Eucharist. The Sacrament is reserved. It is
customary for the president to wear alb and stole. The vast majority of
the congregation happily accepted the introduction of Common Worship and
the current hymnbook, Common Praise. The Church’s main Sunday service
is the Parish Eucharist assisted by two or more lay assistants, servers
and readers, attracts 80- 100 worshipers on average, at 10.00am. The
liturgy used is Order One from Common Worship in our own service book.
There are two readings and a sermon of about ten minutes duration.
On the second Sunday the service is non-Eucharistic; an informal
liturgy, with contemporary worship songs and an all-age talk for the
children, attracts large numbers of ‘fringe’ families and is a good
introduction to the church for those who have not been regular
attendees. The Free form service attracts some 120 people. Alongside the
more formal services, our church uses a less formal Family Eucharist
several times a year on special occasions e.g. Pentecost.
As mentioned, we have a strong musical tradition with Choral Services at
Advent, Christmas, Easter, All Saints and Deanery services.
MISSION
Our Mission Statement
To teach people to discover the generosity of God in their lives and to
respond to it.
The church is magnificent and magnificent things happen in it.
All Saints' should seek to become the church where Stand and Whitefield
people are at home and where they will be welcomed. We should seek to
encourage and develop the resources of the congregation and wider
community.
FINANCE AND STEWARDSHIP
A Stewardship campaign, under the direction of Ken Wiggins, took place
in the Spring of 2002. This campaign will be reviewed in the Spring of
2006. We are the largest contributor to the ‘Parish Share’ in the
Deanery. In 2003 our contribution was £52,000 and £55,000 in 2004. Our
‘Parish Share’ for 2005 is £59,800 .
Charitable Giving- We support year on year the work of the following
organisations:
Christian Aid
Safe in the City
Childrens’ Society
Leprosy Mission
UNICEF
Victim Support
We nominate four or five charities, projects or appeals each year which
receive a share of £1,000/£1,5000.
