The Parish Church of All Saints' Stand, Whitefield

Music & Arts Society

The Music and Arts Society was initially set up to expand and promote the musical heritage within the church to a wider public and in fulfilment of the conditions of a generous grant from the "Foundation for Sport and the Arts" towards the restoration of the organ.

Since the inaugural concert in November 1997 a wide ranging programme of concerts and lectures has been enjoyed by some 60 members and friends together with audiences from the wider community.

A feature of our season is the Annual Buffet during which musical entertainment by Students from the Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music has become a platform for their experience in performing in public.

The Director of Music, Gordon Stewart, together with trumpeters Gavin Reid and Anthony Thompson have performed repertoire works for organ and trumpet.

Organ recitals, choral concerts, brass ensembles (including Fodens and Besses Brass bands and Corus Brass Ensemble), jazz, wind ensembles and solo guitar recitals, organ and harp together with lectures and social events, quiz nights, Desert Island discs, 'these you have loved', are well supported each season.

Summer visits to National Trust houses and gardens are now a feature after the concert season (September to June) is over.

The church and organ are now used by the Royal College of Organists for seminars and by the choral group 'Canzonetta' for recordings.

The next event is an evening of "those you have ?" on Saturday 19th February. The event will take place in the hall with entertainment provided by our Music Director, Gordon Stewart.  A Buffet will be available. Admission £4-00 members, £6-00 non-members.
